Satellite Internet Access Today

D. M. (Prakash) Chitre
Vice President of Technology Development
COMSAT Laboratories

There are a number of challenging issues for seamless operation of internet via satellite. The impact of geosynchronous satellite delay and bit error rates on the performance of transmission control protocol (TCP) will be discussed. The modifications necessary to improve the TCP throughput efficiency performance will be described. The technique of TCP "spoofing"to handle common implementation of TCP will be outlined. Finally, a dynamic, adaptive coding technology embodied in a COMSAT Link Acceleration for Internet (CLA-IP) product will be presented to show how to provide internet services at high quality in a bandwidth efficient manner.
