Ramu Potarazu oversees Intelsat's global business operations, engineering services and internal corporate service requirements. This includes responsibility for satellite fleet operations, technical assistance in connection with the procurement and launch of next generation satellites, including a broadband system, plus the provision of legal, financial, engineering, business strategy and development, human resources and other services to the Intelsat group of companies. Mr. Potarazu joined Intelsat in 1990 as a satellite software engineer, soon assuming responsibility for the data processing requirements of the Satellite Control Center and TT&C sites. He became Manager of Business Systems in 1995 and was promoted to Director of Information Systems a year later. In recognition of his commitment and leadership capabilities, Mr. Potarazu was promoted to VP Operations and CIO in 1998 and led Intelsat's global Y2K initiative. During this time, Intelsat was recognized for having one of the best customer intranet sites in the U.S.A. by CIO magazine. Mr. Potarazu was also instrumental in the $700 million spin-off of New Skies Satellites N.V. in 1998. In late 1999, Mr. Potarazu was promoted to VP, Commercial Restructuring, to guide and consolidate Intelsat's international privatization negotiations and related internal transformation activities. He successfully led the restructuring efforts, which required the delivery of a fully commercial and private entity. Approximately one year later, an agreement on privatization was finalized and Intelsat's strategic direction as a private company was approved, allowing Mr. Potarazu to move into the position of VP, Global Operations and CTO. Mr. Potarazu assumed his current position in mid-2001. Prior to joining Intelsat, Mr. Potarazu was a satellite systems engineer for Contel in Maryland. Mr. Potarazu holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Oklahoma Christian University. He also participated in the Executive Business Program at Stanford University from 1995 to 1997. In 1999, Mr. Potarazu served on President Clinton's Council on Y2K Conversion. He is a director on the Indian CEO High-Tech Council and the National Capital Chapter of the American Red Cross.
