  The Economics of Broadband Satellite

Burt Liebowitz
Independent Consultant

The provision of Internet Protocol (IP) services over satellite has grown significantly in the last few years. Satellites provide backbone connectivity to ISPs in areas poorly served by terrestrial circuits. Satellites provide broadband Internet services direct to the home. Satellites are used to multicast content delivery to corporations and to the edge of the Internet. But it does not follow that these services have or will make money for those who are or wish to be providers. ( > > read more)

DVB-RCS: The Satellite Operator and Satellite Consumer's Friend

Dick Bakker
Vice President
SpaceBridge Semiconductor

The recent slowdown in the Telecom industry has exacerbated the access problems of businesses and consumers that are "offnet", therefore the market opportunity for Satellite services has expanded. The DVB-RCS protocol offers the industry a means of seizing this opportunity by standardizing earth station equipment, providing interoperability between vendors, and driving down system costs. In this session, the demand for broadband access and services will be reviewed as the important backdrop for the opportunities for satellite-based Internet services. What are the demand drivers for adoption? How competitive will satellite-based services be with terrestrial offerings -- especially now that many CLECs have gone by the wayside or been acquired? What advantages can satellites provide over traditional technologies? Will the two-way DTH services succeed the way DBS service has? In a world of cached content, does latency matter?

Satellite technology possesses a unique, one-to-many capability that makes it an excellent method for distributing information via a single-hop to many sites - to caching servers, head-ends, movie theaters, kiosks or individual PCs. Unfortunately, the dot-com implosion has also hit the Internet content delivery arena and the businesses built around this capability have found their business models not producing the revenue originally projected. Is this a temporary condition that will fade as Internet growth resumes, or is it an opportunity that has simply not had ventures taking the appropriate approaches for success? Or, is Internet content delivery simply doomed to be a near-zero margin business? What new approaches will provide the revenue streams needed for success? What are the new players offering? Are there niches where satellite service providers can succeed while waiting for a true, mass market opportunity to evolve?

Satellite-Internet Services for the Enterprise

Jeremy Guralnick

Karthik Ranjan
Director for IP Products

The enterprise market has traditionally used satellite-based network services for very specific applications; e.g., redundancy for existing terrestrial connections or links to remote locations where terrestrial links are not available or not cost-effective. With the advent of lower-cost two-way services and new Ka-band providers, satellite services can play expanded roles in the IT infrastructures of enterprises. Where do these services make sense? What advantages do they offer? What are the price points? This session will address these questions and look at the aforementioned developments in enterprise services delivered via satellite - including case studies drawn from enterprises currently utilizing these technologies.
