Liebowitz The provision of Internet Protocol (IP) services over satellite has grown significantly in the last few years. Satellites provide backbone connectivity to ISPs in areas poorly served by terrestrial circuits. Satellites provide broadband Internet services direct to the home. Satellites are used to multicast content delivery to corporations and to the edge of the Internet. But it does not follow that these services have or will make money for those who are or wish to be providers. This talk will present a realistic look at the cost factors associated with each of the services. Cost factors including space segment, teleport access, Internet access, terrestrial links, capital and labor will be identified and quantified. From these cost factors we will gain an insight into what service providers must charge to make a profit. We will then address the question of whether customers will pay the freight. The talk will conclude with a discussion of what types of organizations will be the likely winners in providing services at a profit in this very dynamic market place. About the Instructor Burt H. Liebowitz is a telecommunications consultant specializing in business planing and technology assessment. He has more than 30 years experience in computer networking, the last five of which have focused on Internet-over-satellite services. He was President of NetSat Express, a leading provider of such services. Before that he was Chief Technical Officer for Loral Orion (now Cyberstar), responsible for Internet-over-satellite access products. Mr. Liebowitz was principal author of two books on distributed processing, has written numerous articles on computing and communications systems, and has lectured extensively on computer networking. He holds three patents for satellite-based data networking systems. Mr. Liebowitz has B.E.E. and M.S. in Math degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an M.S.E.E. from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Main Conference
