The Next Generation Internet – Video Driven

The common perception that broadband Internet is coming and is inevitable can only be supported by the presumption of increased demand for moving image information. That demand can only be driven by the kind of content that will captivate "eyeballs".

A common myth is that this demand can be satisfied with HFC terrestrial architectures and technologies and that satellite will play a minor role. This ignores one major fact in that video content by virtue of it’s production cost, can only be justified by reaching a multiple audience. In addition, the act of requesting video information can and is a extremely low byte count task. In conventional distribution of video (e.g. TV) it is as low as two (or now) 3 digits representing the channel number. Now we have a paradigm we have all heard before; one to many, asymmetrical distribution of time sensitive information…in other words satellite.

If you take the time to go through a TV Guide with a highlighter, two things will stand out. Firstly that 95% of the programming is garbage, the second that around the same number is non-real time.

Given this state of affairs this paper develops an architecture leading to a video enabled Internet with broadband last mile solutions linked to the satellite distribution and intelligent caching of high quality video content. The Hybrid Fiber Satellite or HFS solution.

New Skies Satellites

As Internet usage continues to grow worldwide, particularly in regions outside of the US and Western Europe, Internet over satellite offers compelling economical and technological advantages over traditional trans-oceanic links. Satellite’s inherent capabilities of wide geographical coverage, multicasting-enabled, instant deployment, distance insensitivity, and avoidance of net congestion are ideally suited for Internet access, caching, multicasting, and content delivery. NewSkies Satellites ("NSS"), one of the three global satellite operators, owns and operates 5 geostationary satellites providing coverage in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Asia, and India. NSS is currently a premier Internet service provider to international ISPs. The company plans to offer multicasting to service global enterprise customers, web caching to ISPs, and content delivery to the edge of the net. In addition, with the launch in 2002 of NSS-6 with Ka/Ku transponders, NSS will be well positioned to deliver low-cost 2-way broadband access to enterprises and consumers.
