The need for speed
In todays
high-paced society, Internet users want their content immediately. In addition,
high-bandwidth technologies such as streaming media are becoming increasingly important to
Web users. Content providers need to ensure they have the speed and capacity to deliver
what end users want. Methods to resolve these bandwidth issues and eliminate content
bottlenecks are critical. Many bandwidth shortages can be eliminated through satellites,
thereby increasing the delivery speed. Satellites speed up Internet content delivery in
four ways: single-hop delivery, pushing content close to source and end users, efficient
point-to-multipoint distribution, and reliable multicast transmission. This session
combines information on current bandwidth issues with a discussion of satellite solutions.
