Satellite Internet Forum 2002

Satellite Internet Forum Overview

The broadband explosion that was so loudly predicted has not come to pass. Yet, the fuel for this explosion - broadband adoption rates - indicates that interest and demand continue to rapidly expand:

  • A recent FCC study found that the number of consumer users of high-speed Internet access grew 51% from Jan.1, 2001 to June 30, 2001.

  • The U.S. Department of Commerce's report of February 5, 2002, found a 26% annual increase in total Internet users as of September 30, 2001, with 143 million Americans now online.

  • The Commerce Department report also shows Internet use has been growing fastest among lower-income Americans: 25% annual growth in households earning less than $15,000 a year.

These numbers demonstrate that demand exists and continues to grow, but questions remain:

  • What are the 'hot spots' where profits can be made now?

  • What niches, applications and services can satellite-based Internet systems address now, while being positioned to take advantage of the larger, expanding markets to come?

  • Should projects be shelved in the interim, or should they be launched and grown incrementally?

These questions will be examined through a variety of forums: financial analyses, market forecasts, case studies, and expert discussions. The opportunities that exist today and those expected to emerge tomorrow, will be contrasted with both current and future satellite capabilities, with the industry's pioneers sorting out where, when and how these satellite Internet technologies can best be deployed to meet developing demand.

This conference will examine the state of satellite-delivered Internet and broadband services - from IP multicasting, content delivery, streaming media, and data distribution to distance learning, telemedicine and location-based services. The existing and emerging satellite technologies, including Ka-band, consumer two-way systems, LEO, MEO and GEO-based systems, and GPS, will be reviewed and their impact on the growing market will be considered.

Satellite Internet Forum 2002
From Satellite Internet Services and Applications, December 2001:
"The conference was very useful to me for getting a current perspective on the 2 way satellite communication industry. The mix of technology and business models was great."
