Conference Overview

From Wireless Email to Commerce -- A Close Look at Mobile Messaging Opportunities

Importance

It's clear that email and instant messaging have emerged as the first true "Killer App" of the Internet. In July of 2001, AOL reported that AIM had 100 million registrations and ICQ had 100 million users. And usage is growing, with instant messaging users online to the service for close to 3 hours per day.

In the wireless arena, messaging usage is growing even faster. Short Message Service (SMS) now accounts for over 16 billion messages per month (Q1, 2001) and the average SMS traffic per GSM customer has grown from 0.4 messages in 1995 to an average 35 messages per month at year-end 2000 (source: GSM Association). "SMS traffic volumes are exploding as we see an increasing number of SMS applications appearing," says Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association. Furthermore, the Strategis Group forecasts advanced messaging subscribers to grow at a compound annual growth rate of close to 100% over the next three years. The explosion of mobiles could push this trend even higher. Already mobile phone subscribers have eclipsed the number of conventional fixed-line telephones in Japan and other countries and Gartner Group predicts that the quantity of annual shipments of portable Internet-enabled devices will surpass shipments of PCs in 2003.

Issues to be Examined:

  • What opportunities does mobile messaging provide for carriers, service providers and developers?
  • What applications will emerge as instant messaging spreads to wireless devices?
  • How can existing carriers and network operators tap into this growth opportunity?
  • How will device developments and form factors influence the growth and uses for Internet messaging applications?
  • What are some of the developments on the horizon for advanced wireless messaging?
  • Which Internet applications can benefit from the integration of instant messaging?
  • What opportunities will location and personalization services create?
