All-Optical Networks 2001

Afternoon Workshop:
The All-Optical Network: When and How?

Richard Jensen
Director, Research & Design
Sycamore Networks

Description:
Optical networking vendors are making significant progress in their efforts to eliminate electrical regeneration of light signals on long haul backbones-a development that promises to slash costs. But though there is some buzz around all-optical networks, and some are talking about all-optical networks in Power Point slides, the reality today is the technology is not being deployed in today's networks.

The use of DWDM in carrier backbones requires cross-connect systems with massive capacity to link together thousands of wavelengths. The industry is divided on whether this gear should have an optical or electrical core, and how and when an all-optical core will be built and deployed.

This presentation will focus on the various arguments, and view them from a real world perspective.

  • What is the case for all the optical core?
  • What are the benefits of electrical regeneration?
  • What are the important developments in optical switch components?
  • What is real and what is make-believe?
  • What are the business benefits of all-optical networks?
  • What technologies will stretch transmission distances?
  • What are the practical problems facing carriers?
  • What are carriers and service providers using today?
