Satellites and the Internet v4
John Stevenson

Chief Technology Officer

Orblynx, Inc.

Dr. Stevenson is widely regarded as the father of Internet access and distribution via satellite. He has had technical responsibility, and a commercial deployment role, for satellite-based Internet access services since early 1995. Dr. John Stevenson was formerly Director of Internet Products and Services at INTELSAT. He introduced and developed the original design concepts for the INTELSAT multicast Internet Distribution System in late 1996.

INTELSAT was able to grow its revenues from such services from less than US$10M to US$150M annually in the period 1997 through end-1999. Much of this success stemmed from Dr. Stevenson's initiatives in pursuing pilot commercial services and "live via INTELSAT" field trials with lead customers;

most notably with Telia, Teleglobe and BT. He is frequently an invited speaker at premier technical and business events featuring Internet applications and their international deployment.

Prior to having telecom and data service development assignments at INTELSAT, Dr. Stevenson was Manager of the INTELSAT R&D group, and had a wide range of involvement in both ground- and space-segment engineering.

Dr. Stevenson has authored many research papers and has been the recipient of prestigious awards for publications of technical excellence (e.g. winner of the 1990 IEEE P.K. McElroy Reliability Engineering Award). He holds advanced degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology (University of London).
