Edward J. Fitzpatrick

Edward J. Fitzpatrick is a vice president at Hughes Communications, Inc. (HCI), a unit of Hughes Electronics Corp. He is responsible for the business, regulatory and technical development of HCI’s worldwide SpacewayTM activities. Spaceway is a state-of-the-art, bandwidth-on-demand, high speed data and video wireless expressway that will be available as early as 2001 for business and consumer markets. Fitzpatrick is also HCI’s focal point with government and regulatory agencies on issues pertaining to the National Information Infrastructure (NII).

Fitzpatrick joined HCI from Hughes Space and Communications Company (HSC), the world’s leading supplier of commercial communications satellites, where he served as chief financial officer (CFO) since 1992. In that capacity, he headed the Finance/Business organization in developing and executing HSC’s business strategies and plans.

Prior to his CFO position at HSC, Fitzpatrick was assistant manager of the Space Vehicles Division, where his primary assignment was as production manager for the HS 601, Hughes’ new body-stabilized satellite product line. Before that, he was assistant manager of the Systems Applications Division.
From September 1986 to October 1989, Fitzpatrick served as program manager of that division’s Advanced Spacecraft Programs, where he was responsible for the development and delivery of the Multimission Bus-3 spacecraft and other electronic subsystems.

During his 18-year career at Hughes, Fitzpatrick has held a variety of system development assignments, including business, proposal and program management. Before joining Hughes, he spent 10 years with the U.S. Department of Defense, working in several engineering and management capacities.

In 1969, Fitzpatrick received a bachelors of science degree in Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He earned his MBA from Rutgers University in 1973. He completed the Hughes Program Manager Development Course in 1987 and the UCLA Executive Program in 1991.
