Embedding IP Multicast Technology in Corporate Communications
David Shiff
Vice President, Sales and Marketing
Spacenet Inc.

The need to deliver the common information-software, databases, documents, audio or video content-from a central location to hundreds of remote sites exists in many large geographically dispersed organizations. Reliable IP multicast over satellite enables the delivery of common content to all remote sites with unmatched speed and economics. Because the network bandwidth required is the same regardless of how many remote sites are involved, the benefits associated with time and cost savings grow as the size of the network grows.

Applications in the enterprise environment for satellite-based IP multicasting include delivery of price files, HR information, software updates and computer-based training files. In addition, a variety of specialized applications are emerging such as distribution of content to video and audio servers. Another emerging application that is leveraging IP multicast is interactive distance learning. Satellite based IP multicasting enables organizations to effectively duplicate the class room environment across large numbers of remote participants. Using IP multicast technology real-time video and supporting collateral can be delivered to each remote student with an interactive audio return channel. IP mulitcast technology also enables projection of software applications, making these systems ideal for delivery of software training.
