Satellites and the Internet '99 Conference

Internet Backbone Services

Brent Perrott
Vice President, International Voice & Data
ICG Satellite Services

Backbone connections to the U.S Internet where 80%+ of web content resides, has historically been expensive and slow - particularly when crossing oceans and/or national borders. As the demand for this international service has risen, ISP's have increasingly turned to satellites to provide cost-effective connections. These connections, especially when custom-engineered for high bandwidth (E1 to OC-3) and asymmetric transmission, have helped to expand the Internet and bring Internet services to the international public.

Issues to be addressed in this session include:

  • Why satellite is more cost-effective as the primary international backbone connection for ISP's
  • Review of new data rates available via satellite - OC-3, etc.
  • The benefits of asymmetric circuit design
  • How satellites can increase bandwidth with shorter delivery intervals
  • CASE STUDY Review: ICG/UUNet - Telintar Sur Argentina and ICG/UUNet and Embratel Brazil
