INTELSAT
The presentation will survey classifications of applications, content and
transactions which underpin the continued high growth of Internet traffic and users. The
prospects for access to content on a distributed basis, particularly internationally, will
be reviewed. Progress toward distributed content provision will be covered by reference to
business initiatives taken in the terrestrial network (@home, Real Networks,
broadcast.com, and others). The presentation will conclude with information on the design,
development, testing and pre-commercial demonstrations of an Internet distribution system
(IDS) based on a reliable multicast-to-cache architecture. The INTELSAT IDS is targeting
second-generation Internet service applications, on a fully international basis, and
complementary to the point-to-point access services provided by satellite today.
Primary points to be covered on the IDS:
- the key technologies: multicasting and caching
- the IDS service platform: what it is, what it does, and who needs it
- push vs. pull vs. both push and pull
- developing the IDS platform systems integration aspects
- development of IDS-based services - addressing international ISP requirements
- providing subscription opportunities for content providers
- the pre-commercial IDS demonstration(s) partners, scope and results
