Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth
was nominated to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by President Clinton on May
23, 1997. He was confirmed by the Senate on October 28, 1997 and sworn in by Chairman
William Kennard and Justice Antonin Scalia in November 1997. Commissioner Furchtgott-Roth
is a member of the Federal-State Joint Board on Universal Service.
Mr. Furchtgott-Roth was previously Chief Economist for the House
Committee on Commerce. Prior to joining the Commerce Committee staff, Mr. Furchtgott-Roth
was a senior economist with Economists Incorporated. Earlier, he was on the research staff
of the Center for Naval Analyses.
Mr. Furchtgott-Roth is the coauthor of
three books: Cable TV: Regulation or Competition, International Trade in
Computer Software, and Economics of a Disaster which describes the economic
costs of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Mr. Furchtgott-Roth attended the University of South
Carolina, and he received an S.B. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University. He resides with his wife
Diana and their six children in Bethesda, Maryland. |
