Case Study: Espresso for Schools

Espresso is piloting an entirely new concept in educational multimedia. We are developing, from start to finish, an educational multimedia service, from content creation and subject pedagogy, all the way through to customer relationship and delivery to the desktop.

Espresso does all of the following, in-house, with some assistance from external consultants and contractors:

Educational content:

  • Develops subject pedagogy, linked to needs of UK National Curriculum
  • Programs of Study and ability of video-rich multimedia modules to deliver the curriculum.
  • Content creation, including authoring of modules, devising multimedia activities, digital asset creation, including design, video production including scripting and directing and digitizing to MPEG-1 standard.
  • Multimedia production, including creating workflow process which is managed by a custom-built publishing and sign-off system.
  • Updating of all files, including weekly news updates ·
  • Researching web for suitable sites, and obtaining consent for them to be included in EfS.

Technical delivery:

  • Designing technical architecture for delivery of service over broadband satellite links
  • Installation program for participating schools and Local Education Authorities
  • Validation of technology on different platforms
  • Managing data flow to the community of installed schools
