Optical Networking -
Removing the Bottleneck Between the CPE and the POP

Description:
Optical access is rapidly coming to the forefront of attention as network managers
realize that there is a possibility of unblocking the bandwidth bottleneck between CPE and
central office or POP by using "dark fiber" solutions. This presentation will
outline the essential characteristics of optical access, and its essential requirements to
be manageable, flexible and affordable. Management needs can be met with economic
distribution of the required functions, and the use of innovative solutions to provide
those management capabilities. Performance monitoring, and the ability to support service
level agreements can be achieved without "wrapper" techniques. The architecture
required in the access network can be varied, and there are ways to provide flexible and
reconfigurable network topologies. WDM can play a part in achieving the goal of
affordability, but is not an end in itself. The access network has distinct
characteristics and solutions that support a variety of applications in this area are now
emerging.
